How is it co-opting an event to point out the causes of the event?

Those who co-opt these events don't simply point out the causes, they often use the event to promote their own political or ideological positions.

If the cause of an event is predicted by some political position, then I would think it's a valid point to raise. To take a random example, a severe hurricane is a good occasion to remind people that higher oceanic temperatures is likely, on average, to create more numerous and more severe hurricanes. This can be used to teach people about global warming and the evils of global capitalism.

That's not co-opting the hurricane for political purposes. You can't assign blame on people for telling the truth. Right-wingers who use mass shootings as an occasion to push their religion, on the other hand... that's got nothing to do with the event itself, it's just self-serving.

That's not co-opting the hurricane for political purposes . . .

If it's not co-opting, then it's not what's being discussed here.

Global warming is not a political position, however; it is based on the scientific study of climate. That it is used for political purposes is another matter.

So basically, we can't use any current event to inform our politics? Or any form of science which reminds you of something happening currently?

That's not anywhere close to reasonable.
